At the Rubin Museum of Art two of our precious art storage rooms have columns placed in the most unfortunate locations which alternately effects how we use (or don’t use) these spaces.  Whether we are storing exhibition crates, a curator is examining a sculpture, or it’s a photo shoot, those columns are always causing problems for us.

While we don’t have the ability to remove load bearing structures, we can employ them to serve other functions. Keeping tools of the trade on hand and in view can be a handy resource in a work space. Dressing your columns with a Velcro strip or using magnets couldn’t be easier and serve to make those pesky columns helpers in your storage world. In this case pictures speak more than words and of course there is certainly more than one way to skin a cat… hope this gives others some ideas!
