Mount for Baskets Damaged at the Base
Purpose
This storage system is designed to support deteriorated basketry objects that must be stored on shelves or in drawers. It provides a base or tray to move the object with minimal handling by immobilizing the weak or damaged base and limiting handling of the sides and rim. It also allows viewing of the basket.

Description
The storage mounts are composed of circular disks of pH neutral corrugated cardboard that are laced with 100% cotton tape. The tapes are laced from below the basket, and extend through the cardboard, up the sides of the basket and tie above the basket (Fig.1).

Materials Tools Supplies
- 100% cotton twill tape
- pH neutral corrugated cardboard, single-ply
- Utility knife
Construction
- Measure the diameter of the base of the basket. Add 1in to 2in to the measurement.
- Cut out the shape of the base from a sheet of pH neutral cardboard.
- Cut 4, 6, or 8 evenly spaced slits in the cardboard disk near the edge of the form. The number of slits depends on the size and weight of the basket.
- Lace the cotton twill tapes through the slits and around the outer edge of the disk so that they can be tied above the basket.
- Tie the twill tape over the top of the basket.
Comments
This mount could cause additional damage to baskets with insecure, incomplete, or flexible rims. Use other storage systems for these types of objects.
